06 February 2012 : It has been REALLY cold in Alaska. Fairbanks endured the coldest January in 40 years and nearly 6 weeks with sub-zero temperatures hovering between 10 to 50 below zero. Other locations in the interior had the coldest January on record. Check HERE for more about the record cold. The extreme temperatures prevented the BLM from doing much grooming the past month but now they are out grooming in full force with the arrival of some warm weather.
16 January 2012 : The interior of Alaska has not experienced the heavy snow that dumped on southcentral portions of the state -BUT- there is plenty of snow in the White Mountains and the trails are in good condition. Now if it would just warm up a little bit. Temperatures have recently been hovering in the 30 to 50 below zero range and have only briefly climbed above zero in the past month.
16 December 2011 : Frequent snowfall during the first two weeks of December have greatly improved the trail conditions in the White Mountains Recreation Area. The BLM has groomed most of the trails. Check HERE for the latest trail conditions.
18 November 2011 : Winter has definitely arrived in interior Alaska. Record low temperatures have been shattered this week in the Fairbanks area. Readings between 40 to 50 below zero were observed across the region. Read about the cold HERE. The frigid weather has been accompanied by clear and dry weather. Despite any new snowfall, some of the trails in the White Mountains have been packed down. Conditions will still be a little rough until we get enough snow to fill up all the tussocks and bumps. There are still 4 months until the race start and plenty of time for more snow to fall.

01 October 2011 : The 2012 race lottery is over. About 33 folks from Fairbanks were able to make it to the event. The 2012 race roster and wait list are now available HERE. Registration is still open until the pre-race meeting on March 24, 2012. Please see the registration link for details.
01 October 2011 : Registration for the 2012 race lottery is closed. The lottery will be held this evening at 7pm at the Silver Gulch Brewery in Fox. Registration will remain open after the lottery and additional entries will be placed on the waitlist in the order they are received (see registration link for details). The roster and wait list will be available on the website and the WM100 Facebook page after the lottery.
27 September 2011 : The public lottery to determine the race roster and wait list is on Saturday October 1st at the Silver Gulch Brewery in Fox (10 miles north of Fairbanks). Dinner and drinks will be available for purchase starting at 530 PM. The lottery will begin at 7PM. You are welcome to just come for the lottery if you do not want to purchase dinner and you do not need to be present to win a spot in the race. We'll pick names out of a hat and publish the roster and waitlist on the website afterwards.

24 August 2011 : A lottery selection process will be utilized this year to determine who is on the 2012 race and waitlist roster. 23 April 2011 : The 2012 race will take place March 25-27, 2012. We had a post race meeting with the BLM yesterday. They feel that our race is helping to achieve the BLM mission of the White Mountains Rec Area. They also felt the race was a great success and had only positive feedback. So we will be applying for a 5 year permit. Thanks to all the volunteers and racers for making the race such a success and helping to make the WM100 an annual event!

24 March 2011 : There was an article in the Fairbanks Daily News Miner about this weekends race. As skier Matias Saari points out in a comment to the News Miner article, "Watch for former Fairbanksan Kate Pearson (now Kate Arduser) to perhaps challenge Rachel Steer, a two-time Olympic biathlete. Steer followed up her Tour of Anchorage runner-up result by skiing 40K back to the start!" - There are some strong "world class" athletes coming to town for the second running of the WM100!
23 March 2011 : Each checkpoint will have one serving of food for every racer. There will also be unlimited water and hot drinks. The full race menu of food can be found HERE.
22 March 2011 : UAF Outdoor Adventures is sponsoring the race again this year by providing us with space to hold the mandatory pre-race meeting. Thanks for the support UAF OA.
21 March 2011 : There has been a lot of movement on the wait list roster recently. As of today, we only have one person remaining on the wait list. There is still a chance to get into this years race if someone on the main roster drops out.
17 March 2011 : The race has two new sponsors: Beaver Sports located in Fairbanks and the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Beaver Sports has donated some high quality door prizes for the pre-race meeting. The Fairbanks Memorial Hospital has donated cash to help cover costs for our medical gear and has also donated medical supplies for our race medics. Thank you sponsors!
14 March 2011 : A couple racers that were skiing the course a few days ago claimed to have seen fresh bear tracks between Checkpoint #3 and #4. Racers might want to add bear spray to their gear list!
13 March 2011 : The BLM has done an excellent job grooming the trails and clearing downed trees in the White Mountains after the heavy snow and major drifting from the strong storms in late February. The trails are in great shape!
28 February 2011 : Two major winter storms during the past week brought heavy snow, strong winds and blizzard conditions to Fairbanks and the White Mountains. Several groups of people were stranded on the race course. There is an article from the Fairbanks Daily News Miner HERE about a couple that was rescued after the first storm and another one HERE about people trapped during the second storm.
07 February 2011 : The race has received its first sponsorship! Delcourt Aviation, located in Fairbanks, has generously offered to support the White Mountains 100.

22 December 2010 : BLM has approved the 2011 WM100 race permit! BLM also also allowed us to increase the roster from 50 to 65 participants.
28 November 2010 : BLM is still processing our 2011 WM100 race permit. We are hoping this is finalized in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned...
27 November 2010 : Interior Alaska just experienced the worst freezing rain event in over 70 years. Fortunately our local snowpack was spared any severe damage. We just got back from a ski tour in the White Mountains and there is anywhere from 2 to 4 feet of snow on the ground. This is a great start to the winter. The trails are in great shape!
01 October 2010 : The 2011 White Mountains 100 is FULL. There was a mad rush to get spots in the 2nd annual race. Due to the interest and demand for a spot in this event, we will be working with the BLM to see if we can add additional spots on the roster. We will likely not know if the roster number will increase until sometime in November.
30 September 2010 : Waitlisted entries will be accepted after the first 50 slots are full. Waitlisted entries must be submitted via email and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to get on the wait list please email your name, division (run, ski, bike), hometown, and phone number to: whitemountains100@gmail.com Registration payment for waitlisted racers is only required if they make it on to the main roster.
20 September 2010 : General registration for the 2011 race will open at 12am October 1, 2010. There is a short pre-registration window for the 2010 race participants. Due to the interest in the White Mountains 100, this will be the only year previous racers have an opportunity to register early. In addition, only online payments will be accepted for the 2011 race on a first-come, first-served basis.
10 July 2010 : The 2011 race is tentatively scheduled from 8am Sunday March 27th through 8pm Tue March 29th. These dates will be confirmed once we get our BLM permit approved. Registration for the 2011 race will open on October 1, 2010. Please note that the early registration went up $50 from the 2010 race -- so now registration is $200 between October 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010.
23 April 2010 : The 2011 race dates are still being determined but the plan is to have the race in late March. The dates will be posted sometime this May. Registration for the 2011 race will open on October 1, 2010.

25 March 2010 : Racers and volunteers shared their stories at the post-race party last night in Fairbanks. Many participants brought photos from the race course. A collection of photos from the 2010 race can be found HERE.
24 March 2010 : The White Mountains 100 officially came to an end Monday night. Thanks to all the racers and volunteers for their participation and help in making the first White Mountains 100 a success. Results from the race can be seen here.

12 March 2010 : Where's the snow? The skies over interior Alaska have failed to drop much snow this winter. In fact, Fairbanks is in the running for the 2nd least snowy winter on record. Don't be alarmed though...the 100-mile race course is still in great shape, especially the first 40 miles and last 20 miles, which have been groomed nicely by BLM. The 40-mile stretch between Cache Mtn cabin (Checkpont #2) and Borealis LeFevre cabin (Checkpoint #4) has quite a bit of overflow, glare ice, and bumps. Racers should be prepared to deal with very icy surfaces and/or patches of open water. This years race will definitely produce some entertaining "tales from the trail" even if the weather doesn't get stormy.
03 March 2010 : The GPS track of the race course and the waypoints for all the checkpoints and other cabins in the White Mountains Recreation Area are now available for download. The track and waypoints are available in GPS Exchange Format (.gpx) and should be compatible with most GPS units. The files can be found under the "Race Maps" link on the left-hand side bar of the webpage.
28 February 2010 : The 2010 Iditarod Trail Invitational (ITI) starts today. Racers will traverse 350 miles of the Iditarod sled dog trail to McGrath or complete the entire 1100 mile route to Nome, Alaska. The White Moutains 100 will be counted as a qualifier for the ITI. Pete Basinger, Jeff Oatley, and Rocky Reifenstuhl will be competing in the White Mountains 100 after completing the ITI. Follow their progress here: ITI Results.
02 February 2010 : The 2009-10 winter season snow drought continues in the interior. So far, this winter is falling into the top 10 lowest snowfalls for Fairbanks. BUT - the White Mountains trails are in bomber shape considering the dismal snowfall. The course is hardpacked and bumpy in places. Skiers and bikers have comfortably traversed the entire race course already this winter, so don't be discouraged. There are still almost 7 weeks until the race start and plenty of time for additional snowfall. There was an article in the Fairbanks Daily News Miner about the low snow this winter.
30 January 2010 : A location and time have been determined for the pre-race meeting. The pre-race meeting will be at 4PM Saturday March 20, 2010 in the UAF Wood Center Conference Room C/D. ALL RACERS MUST ATTEND. Click HERE for a location map of the UAF Wood Center and parking options.
28 January 2010 : The race received some more media attention today. There was an article in the Fairbanks Daily News Miner regarding the White Mountains 100 race permit approval.
27 January 2010 : BLM has approved the permit for the 2010 race! There is one major stipulation. This is a change in the race start date. The race is now scheduled to start at 8am Sunday March 21, 2010. BLM determined that this one change in our permit application resolves a number of concerns that came in during the public comment period dealing with cabin usage, congestion on the trail, etc.
25 January 2010 : BLM is still processing the race permit. We should know results of the permitting process any day now. Stay tuned!!!
07 January 2010 : The BLM public comment period for the White Mountains 100 race ends today. BLM will be evaluating the comments and doing a final review of our permit application. A final answer regarding the approval of our race permit is expected no later than Jan 22nd.
10 December 2009 : There was a flurry of media attention today regarding the race and BLM permitting. An extensive article was in the Fairbanks Daily News Miner as well as other newspapers in the Alaska and around the country since the story went out on the AP wire. The Alaska Public Radio Network also broadcast the story on statewide radio.
07 December 2009 : The BLM public comment period for the White Mountains 100 race is available HERE. The BLM is seeking feedback from the public about this race through January 7, 2010. We encourage all racers or anyone else interested in this race to comment.
04 December 2009 : The 2010 race ROSTER is full and a waiting list has been started. There was a mad rush of entries as the roster approached 50 people. We just want to thank everyone for their interest in this race. The BLM public comment period regarding this race should be available soon.

23 November 2009 : We had a meeting with the BLM regarding the race permit. The BLM is requiring our permit request to go out for a 30-day public comment period. This will be an opportunity for all users (skiers, bikers, runners, snowmachiners, mushers, skijorers, trappers, etc) to provide feedback about the race. We will make the link available when the public comment period is open and we encourage all racers or anyone else interested in this race to comment.
